Mission and Work

Our Mission:

Yellow Farmhouse Education Center uses culinary and farm-based education to connect people to each other and to where their food comes from so that we can cultivate a shared commitment to supporting a local, sustainable food system accessible and affordable to all. Drawing on the bounty of the land and the sea, as well as the rich culinary and agricultural heritage of the region, Yellow Farmhouse:

  • Convenes stakeholders and sparks dialogue to create meaningful change in how our food is grown, prepared, and consumed.
  • Forges partnerships with area schools to develop curriculum and educational opportunities for teachers and students, ensuring that the next generation is invested in a sustainable food system.
  • Offers experiential opportunities for individuals of all ages to cook, share meals, and learn together how to support human, community, and environmental health.

Housed at Stone Acres Farm, a working farm in Stonington CT, Yellow Farmhouse envisions a healthy, robust and thriving local food system accessible and affordable to all.

Yellow Farmhouse Education Center Commitment to Equity in the Food System:

At the Yellow Farmhouse Education Center, we are learning how to push our work forward through a lens of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. The ways in which we all connect to food are riddled with examples of structural inequality, such as racism, settler colonialism, gender discrimination, and unequal access to land or resources. A thriving food community is one where everyone is heard, accepted, and celebrated.

The worlds of food and farming have a complex and very real connection to the struggles of historically marginalized communities. With our resources as an organization, we have a role to play in alleviating those struggles, amplifying the work and contributions of underrepresented groups in food and sustainable agriculture, and helping build a resilient food system rooted in a framework of justice.

As staff, we will check in on the following goals, refining them as we grow, learn, and act as an organization. Some of this work will be internal, and some will be more present in our public programming. We encourage your feedback on all of these pursuits.

  • Build new partnerships, and strengthen existing ones, with an eye towards dismantling racism and other forms of oppression in the food system.
  • Identify resources and privileges (e.g., materials, time, capital, knowledge) that can be used to support frontline organizations.
  • Review and revise our content to include more BIPOC and other historically marginalized perspectives.
  • Collect the wisdom of farmers, chefs, scholars, writers, and activists from outside historically dominant perspectives.
  • Learn the full history of the land we work on, the agricultural practices we value, and the culinary techniques we are sharing.

About Our Work:

The Yellow Farmhouse Education Center is located on the ancestral land of the Mohegan, Pequot, Niantic, and Narragansett nations. We honor their past, present, and future contributions to the land stewardship, agricultural knowledge, and foodways of our region. Through our mission to connect people to their food and where it comes from, we seek to dismantle the harm of colonialism on our food system while working to center indigenous wisdom.

We also recognize this land acknowledgment as a small but important step in our journey as we learn more, build stronger relationships, and take more meaningful action.
